After two weeks of orientation, training, and preparing for the first hitch of the Fall season, the time had come for our crew to graduate from recent recruit, to Crew Member for the Montana Conservation Corps.

On the plane to Montana, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I loved the outdoors and didn’t want to work inside another summer; but I also wasn’t the most avid hiker or the most outdoorsy person. I never tent camped before in my life, I had never held a tool in my life (does a butter knife or fork count?).

As we enjoyed the beautiful views on the top of Mount Martson and worked our hardest on repairing the burnt over trail we had some visitors along the way.

I came to MCC from an application found in an environmentally focused job list online. I’d never been out west and had a low key obsession with trails and the idea of mountains. If I’m being honest, I didn’t know what to expect when I dropped out of the life I was living in Michigan to move out to Montana.

I’m not going to lie and say I knew just what to expect when I started. I knew that I’d be spending the summer doing work to benefit the natural areas around Montana, and that was good enough for me.
