Eventually the tour will come to an end, and the music may die down for just a bit, but until then the show must go on!

“It is the song of the hermit thrush at twilight and the lapping of waves against the shoreline and the melody of the wind in the trees. It is the unique odor of balsams and of freshly turned humus and of mist rising from mountain meadows. It is the feel of spruce needles underfoot and sunshine on your face and wind blowing through your hair. It is all of these at the same time, blended into a unity that can only be appreciated with leisure and which is ruined by artificiality.”

Plans versus Reality

The plan was simple: hike a crew member 15 miles into the Great Bear Wilderness and meet up with her crew. The reality played out a little differently.

On our final day of work on our first week’s project, I felt that we had made a very tangible change to the local environment. That few miles of fence that we had taken out were a few miles reclaimed to Nature. One could look to see what work was still to be had—which would be somewhat discouraging, but I am of the opinion that the positive aspect of any given situation should be dwelled upon. And we truly had many things to be proud of that first week.

This area seemed unreal. It was as if each color was more vibrant than in any other place, the plants seemed to each have a character and the many lakes seemed to each have a soul in their depths.

These guys...

It’s easy to stand with a group of people you’ve known for 3 days, look at your phone, and hit refresh every 5 seconds until it’s time to leave. It’s much more fun, however, to be lifted in the air by this group of strangers and passed through a maze of ropes. It’s amazing to learn just how much entertainment can be found when people have only eachother’s buttons to push, games to play with one another, and eachother’s singing and playing to listen to.

Every member of the crew brought something special to the table, and some of the most memorable moments we had were sitting by the water and learning about their lives in Eureka.  They inspired us and I hope we inspired them and instilled a little bit of passion for the outdoors.
