Since we are mid-way though our trail work season I wanted to devote this blog post to remembering all the small moments of gratitude we feel while out on hitch. We are all out here because we love the trails, we love the wilderness, and we love doing good work for something we feel connected to. Sometimes it is easy to get lost in the work and the discomfort of being away from our beds, and the people back home who we love. In these moments it is import to remember all the tiny reasons that we are out here. The moments that remind us why we love what we do.
This is what I have gathered though-out our hitch from my team members and crew leaders about what we are grateful for.
Warm sunlight on cold mornings .
Being able to eat chocolate for breakfast without feeling bad about it.
The sound of a creek with your eyes closed.
Having amazing trail dinners cooked by your coworkers when you’re tired.
A moose and her calf cross our path while wading in the river.
A mouth full of huckleberries on a long hot day.
The feeling of dirt on your skin at the end of the day. Not wanting to wash the dirt off because it doesn’t feel dirty, it feels like accomplishment.
Sitting under a huge cedar tree that looks like it could belong in the Redwoods National Park.
Taking the time to watch an inch worm inching up a tree.
Camping next to a creek that is perfect for an after work dip.
Coffee in the morning, even if it is just instant.
Lounging around a crackling campfire with a good book and good company.
Trekking through miles of trail that we just cleared.
