Montana Conservation Corps Flood and Disaster Relief Assistance.
Montana Conservation Corps (MCC) is prepared to deploy its AmeriCorps members to assist with flood and disaster relief efforts. MCC corpsmembers are at the very beginning of their five month term of service. Though inexperienced at this stage, crews are led by well-trained crew leaders. Corps members are based in Billings, Bozeman, Helena, Kalispell and Missoula, and may serve at locations statewide.
MCC crews may assist with all sorts of relief efforts including sand bagging, mucking out flooded homes, and removing hazardous trees with chainsaws, and more. With appropriate training and supervision, crews may engage in mold abatement, shelter assistance, or other activities where the assistance of young, motivated, and hard working people is needed. In all activities, the safety and health of our corpsmembers is paramount.
Though crews are routinely assigned to pre-scheduled projects, MCC will make every effort to reassign corpsmembers from existing projects to respond as promptly as possible to local emergencies and disaster/flood relief efforts. MCC cannot guarantee that crews will be immediately available, or that they may be reassigned in a timely manner to local disaster needs.
Each crew is able to travel to project sites statewide using 7-passenger Suburban-type vehicles. Crews are prepared to camp outdoors and provide their own meals. Crews need a safe and secure place to set a camp from which they can deploy to relief sites. Crews may also be hosted in churches, community centers, gyms, etc. Crews may be able to provide basic hand tools (shovels, wheelbarrels, chainsaws, etc.)
The standard cost for an MCC crew for a 5-day (40 hour) service project is $4000/wk. This includes all transportation, food, basic tools, and administrative and payroll costs. Rates may be negotiated based on the length of the assignment. MCC may be able to assist on shorter assignments at no cost. In addition, MCC requires a project partner to orient the crew to the project assignment, serve as a liaison to the host agency, and provide onsite support as needed.
