Wildlands Restoration Team Now Enrolling May 2017 — 17 Years of Age or Older
Being a Wildlands Restoration Team (WRT) Crew Member is anything but typical. This program puts members on the front lines to combat one of the most pressing ecological threats to natural systems in the Northern Rockies, invasive plant and tree infestations. Through chemical, mechanical, and biological treatment techniques, Corps Members gain valuable professional and practical experience in the growing field of ecological monitoring and restoration. The Wildlands Restoration Team plays a pivotal role in the preservation and protection of ecosystems across a wide variety of landscapes on our public lands.
What does a WRT Crew Member do?
WRT programs are currently based out of the Greater Yellowstone (Bozeman, MT) and Western Wildlands (Missoula, MT) regional offices. We offer summer only (450-hour term) and full term (675-hour term) positions through the fall. WRTs based out of the Western Wildlands (Missoula) office will focus most of their time treating new outbreaks of invasive plants in backcountry locations in the Selway-Bitterroot, Frank Church, and Scapegoat Wilderness areas. Crews will also spend time treating, mapping, and monitoring invasives in the Lochsa River corridor in Idaho. WRTs based out of our Greater Yellowstone (Bozeman) office will work in iconic parks such as Grand Teton, Yellowstone, Theodore Roosevelt and more. Members that participate in the longer term will also have the opportunity to learn about community-based restoration efforts such as native seed collection, stream restoration, water quality testing or mapping.
Things To Remember When You Apply
Joining MCC is not a job—it is a serious commitment to service and to participating as an active learner in a crew setting. We look for applicants ready to put others’ interests before their own, learn and support their peers’ learning, complete the entire term of service, participate as a positive member, work hard while serving long hours and living outdoors in all weather, respect MCC as a drug- and alcohol-free workplace, and to lead by example. WRT Crew Members will receive a small living stipend during their term and an AmeriCorps Education Award at the end of their successful term of service. The AmeriCorps Education Award for WRT Crew Members serving a 450-hour term (summer only) in 2017 is $1,527.45. The AmeriCorps Education Award for WRT Crew Members serving a 675-hour term (extending through the fall) in 2017 is $2,199.92.
WRT Crew Member positions are available in two of our regions: Greater Yellowstone (Bozeman, MT) and Western Wildlands (Missoula, MT). Each region has its own charms, strengths, and specialties. Take some time to explore our regional pages to learn more about each region and remember that wherever you choose to serve, you’ll come to love and value the surrounding community. Please only apply to the region in which you are most interested.
