Staff Crewleader
The Montana Conservation Corps (MCC) is hiring staff crew leaders based out of Kalispell and Missoula for the 2010 field season. The position offered is from May 3rd through November 5th, 2010.
MCC is a crew based program whose mission is to equip young people with the skills and values to be active citizens who improve our communities and environment. MCC has an annual $4.5 million budget and receives funding from AmeriCorps, project sponsors, grants and private donations. Statewide each year, the MCC has over 200 AmeriCorps young adult members and 120 youth corps members who perform natural resource work across the region with a variety of land use agencies and non-profit partners.
The Crew leader is a seasonal staff position whose primary duties include assuring the successful completion of MCC natural resource and community service projects, on-site management of a crew, maintenance of crew dynamics to insure a high level of crew functioning and the delivery of the full range of MCC program components. The CL is a staff position and works under the supervision of the Regional staff including the Regional Supervisor and Program Coordinator
Programmatic Duties: • Ability to work long hours in challenging conditions, often with very little direct supervision. • Guide, support and assist Corpsmembers to insure quality work performance, safety, and crew well being. • Communicate and organize work in conjunction with the sponsor/technical advisor; assure project completion to the satisfaction of sponsor expectations. • Insure safety is the top priority during all MCC activities and projects; promote a ‘culture of safety’. • Follow all MCC policies and procedures; assure crew compliance to promote safe, well-functioning crews. • Implement fair and appropriate discipline of Corpsmembers as needed. • Assure implementation of all elements of the Corpsmember Development program, including PLACE and other education components, successful performance of crew roles and Corpsmember Individual Action Plan goals. • Assist Regional staff with recruitment of Corpsmembers, where possible. • Teach Corpsmembers all relevant technical project and camplife skills necessary to insure safety and high quality project completion. • Provide technical, logistical and leadership support to crews and individual Corpsmembers.
Administrative Duties: • Maintain accurate crew, payroll, personnel, Corpsmember development, safety and work project records. • Maintain accurate inventory and records. • Complete and submit required reports and other paperwork in a timely manner before end of term of service. • Write and deliver Corpsmember evaluations; include both positive feedback and areas of potential improvement.
Qualifications: • Previous leadership experience, skills and training, preferably in a corps, or similar setting. • Technical skills, including construction, trail work and knowledge of a wide range of power and hand tools. • Advanced First Aid training (WAFA, WFR). • Effective written and oral communication skills. • Valid driver’s license, ability to pass a motor vehicle records check, US Citizenship or ability to work in the US.
Compensation • Biweekly salary of $1,040 • $ 8 daily food allowance while on projects included with crew spike • Target dates for season are from May 3, 2010 through November 5, 2010.
