Project Partner FAQs

  • What is expected of me as an MCC Project Partner?
    • As a Project Partner, you and your technical advisors are directly involved with our crews. A Crew’s performance hinges on your direction and involvement. When members of a crew get recognized for their efforts, it can make the difference between just getting the job done and realizing that they are part of a valuable service to your agency/organization. Recognition and education will bring out the best in our crews.
  • Who is a typical member?
    • We don’t have a typical member. AmeriCorps members join MCC from across the nation, from a wide age range and with diverse backgrounds. If anything, diversity is what you will see amongst the crew. Half are between 20 and 24 with ages ranging from 17 to 30. Youth crews consist of two AmeriCorps leaders and then Montana youth ages 15 to 17.
  • What are the qualifications of the Crew Leaders?
    • The 3-month Leadership Development program involves intensive technical skills training including: chainsaw, trails, backcountry skills, leave no trace, and wilderness advanced first aid. In addition we include leadership and supervision training to practice the interpersonal skills needed to support a well-functioning crew.
  • What skills do the Corpsmembers have?
    • Corpsmembers receive technical skills training including: trails, backcountry skills, leave no trace principles, and first aid/CPR. The most important quality is enthusiasm and ability to perform in challenging situations. You’ll be impressed by what the crew can get done. But our sponsors say it best, for instance: “MCC crews are outstanding in every way—courteous, interested in learning, skilled and enthusiastic. We are always impressed with the work ethic and discipline of MCC’s fine crews—thank you!” Carol McEvoy, Rim Country Land Institute.
  • What is the size of a typical crew?
    • A typical crew consists of two leaders and five to six corpsmembers.
  • Can a MCC crew be in the backcountry?
    • Yep, each year we have been getting more and more projects that involve extensive long stays in the backcountry. We have arranged for crews to remain in the backcountry during their off times, often a 10-day-on/4-day-off schedule. Crews stay at camp and recreate instead of needing to be transported back to the trailhead for a shower. This often involves logistical pack support and coordination with someone from your agency to resupply food or personal items such as white gas, guitars, books, or mail from home..
  • How flexible are your MCC crews in terms of their work schedule?
    • We are incredibly flexible. Our crews work anything from Monday to Friday, to 10-day hitches, to 18-week settings in the backcountry. Basically the crews can meet your needs.
  • What gear does MCC provide?
    • Our crews come fully prepared to get the job done. We provide basic hand tools, safety equipment, camping gear, and vehicles. If needed, we may ask that you as the Sponsor provide any specialized tools needed for the project.
  • What kind of work do the crews perform?
    • You name it and our crews have done it— from removing tumbleweeds that were 10 feet high, to building a mouse enclosure for scientific research. But more typical projects include backcountry and urban trail construction and maintenance, watershed restoration, tree planting, stabilizing streambanks, and building community gardens.
  • Are corpsmembers covered by insurance?
    • MCC secures multiple insurance coverage. Corpsmembers are covered by MCC's Worker's Compensation Insurance. And MCC carries a $3,000,000 general liability insurance policy and professional liability insurance.
  • Is MCC a state agency?
    • No, MCC is a private 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation governed by a Board of Directors.
