Wet ‘n Wild Willows

Two crew members stand up to their waists in a creek.

Over the last 4 days, the GY WRT Crew Leads spent their time restoring local streams with Montana Freshwater Partners. The overall goal of this project was to terraform incised stream banks that have been heavily eroded over the years, and live stake willows along the banks to encourage vegetation growth and soil retention. Lacking the ability to operate any sort of heavy machinery, the WRT Leads stuck to what they know best: putting plants in the dirt. After enduring below-freezing temperatures and soaking wet clothes, the crew came out successful, live-staking a total of 710 willows across four banks and prepping seven other banks by harvesting around 1000 more willows. From eating a steak dinner in a wall tent to putting on frozen-solid waders and boots every morning, the crew not only learned a lot about the process of stream restoration, but they had a great time doing it as well!
