The MCC Crew Leaders are at it again! The 2019 leads have completed their first hitch of the season in the Nez Perce/ Clearwater Nat’l Forest this past week. Although the weather proved dreary at times, spirits among the trainees were anything but.
With a focus on chainsaw training, the group was based out of Slate Creek and later Fenn Ranger Station. We spent time improving the bucking and limbing skills learned in recent trainings, and moved on to felling trees as the hitch continued. Individuals also worked on their axemanship, leadership skills, and increased their familiarity with the organization and mechanics of hitch life.
During work hours, the team cleared unwanted trees from multiple campsite locations. With the upcoming summer months on everyone’s mind, the group worked hard and stayed positive even as the cold March rains added volume to the nearby Clearwater and Selway Rivers. After work, the lightheartedness and focus continued during lessons on cutting techniques, group meals, and tool maintenance.
A great first hitch overall, the leads look forward to the upcoming weeks and the opportunity to hit the trails as the season progresses!
