Yellow Crew - Big Horn, WY

A view of a rushing river

MCC Yellow crew headed out on their 4th hitch of the season, heading to Big Horn National Forest for the second time. We were given the task of doing corridor clearing on the Dry Fork trail as well as the Little Horn trail. Both beautiful and different in their own ways. For the first 5 days, our crew worked on the Dry Fork trail where we experienced an exhausting hiking up that pushed us physically and mentally. However, the trail came with some perks. We witnessed wranglers pushing 700 mama cows up the trail to an open field where they will stay for the rest of the summer. As exciting as it was to see all the cows they made our job a little more difficult. They created many social trails that we then had to cover up.

Nonetheless, we also encountered a teen black bear on our way down which was exciting for many. Sunday and Monday our crew headed out on the Little Horn trail to do some chainsaw work which was done by our crew lead Sienna! This was our first hitch experiencing front backcountry in which the nearest town was an hour away, we had no service and no access to water except for the river next to camp. We all kept busy in our own way after the work day: Jack went on his daily runs, Jacob played his guitar, Zac went flying fishing and taught Phoebe the tips and tricks, Sienna read her book while Henry would build fire. Overall the hitch was tough for all of us but made us better physically and mentally.
