Yellowstone Backcountry

A crew member takes a selfie with a bison in the distance

Yellow Crew headed out for their last hitch of the summer season but first hitch backcountry. We headed back to Yellowstone where we hiked 8 miles to Calfee Lookout Station in the Lamar Valley. On our way in we got stuck between a single bison and a bison with a mate having a grumble off. As well as a badger who bravely defended its home. As expected we watched the packers pass us and lap us as we got closer to the cabin. An exciting start to a very interesting hitch. On the second day, a crew member was evacuated via helicopter due to a split hernia. Motivation and morale were immediately gone as we watched our friend fly off. As hard as the rest of the day was we carried on with the rest of our hitch, fighting off horseflies who quite literally bit us every two seconds. We found ways to keep our minds at ease whether that was spending time swimming in the Lamar River or taking a much-needed nap. A few of us got sick from either the water or the food but we finished the work regardless. We even met a few past MCC members on the trail! Nonetheless, our hitch came to end and we will have to sadly say goodbye to two of our members at graduation.
