The Black Cache crew assisted the Bechler Trail Crew in the backcountry of Yellowstone with an ambitious project.
Dunanda Falls, located along the Boundary Creek Trail, has been popular with visitors because of its hot springs. You can enjoy the warm water under the falls while getting misted with cold water.
The issue at hand was visitors making their way down a hill through heavy brush. Not only is this a hazard for visitors, but also endangers whitebark pines in the area.
Our task was to refine a newly cut trail down to the hot springs, providing safety and accessibility. The Dunanda Falls Trail has been open as of September 17, 2024 and is eight miles down the Boundary Creek Trail.
Additionally, the Black Cache crew got to do backcountry IKEA work by mixing concrete and installing horse-hitching posts. The steel hitching posts and concrete were flown in by helicopter because the chances of someone hiking those in are similar to winning the lottery.
